Mecco (Cranberry Twp., Pa.) today announced the launch of a laser marking machine for heat-sensitive materials such as plastic, metal and glass.

The 3W SMARTmark UV laser marking machine is designed to provide clean, high-contrast permanent barcodes and other unique identifiers for various delicate or heat-sensitive materials without damage. According to Mecco, its 355 nm wavelength is better absorbed, so it is unlikely to burn surrounding materials, leaving only accurate, undamaged marks. To enhance usability, a real-time visible pointer is included for preview marking.

The UV laser is designed to integrate seamlessly with existing equipment and assembly lines. Manufacturers can also connect SMARTmark devices to their enterprises to enable industrial data collection. Mecco's EtherMark integrated software uses the EtherNet/IP protocol to communicate with the PLC (programmable logic controller) locally.

"Many of our customers, from medical device companies to electronic component and automobile manufacturers, have been looking for high-tech laser marking solutions that can successfully mark their products," Mecco President Dave Sweet said in a press conference. "This UV laser marking machine is such a solution. Our customers can now get the durable, readable marks they need for identification, traceability and compliance on a variety of products."
