Compared with traditional laser engraving, this laser marking cannot be destroyed or polished away.

(Press release) ALROSA has launched a breakthrough diamond tracking technology that uses non-invasive laser marking. Unlike traditional laser engraving, this laser marking will not be damaged or polished. It distinguishes ALROSA's diamonds from other diamonds (including those made in the laboratory), allows them to be uniquely identified, and provides detailed information about the source of the diamond.

Consumer surveys in the major diamond markets in the United States and China indicate that diamond tracking is an important factor when buying. Tracking involves recording all stages of the diamond’s life cycle, from the mine to the jewelry store, to ensure its origin.

ALROSA is launching a new non-invasive method for the physical marking of rough and polished diamonds, which was developed with the help of scientists from the Russian Academy of Sciences, ALROSA’s Research Geology Enterprise (NIGP) and the Yakutniproalmaz Institute.

Unlike other tracking methods based on keeping digital copies of diamonds, ALROSA physical nanomarkers can identify gems with 100% accuracy. It is also different from other engraving techniques that are closer to the diamond surface.

ALROSA’s laser nano-marks are printed inside the crystal lattice and penetrate the entire atomic structure of the diamond, making it impossible to see it without a scanner. Diamonds with such nano-marks have been successfully certified by GIA, the largest certification center in the industry, many times.

The logo is a three-dimensional code associated with the ALROSA Provenance platform. It provides in-depth information about the source and characteristics of the diamond, as well as a unique identification number, photos, videos, and detailed information on how to cut. Scientists believe that with the development of technology, it is likely to become an important way to embed large amounts of data in diamonds, including media files, images and music.

The company provides its partners with equipment to mark diamonds and read them. It takes less than a minute to scan the code and will eventually be optimized to ensure higher efficiency.

Patent research confirms that this is the first commercial use of this technology to track rough and polished diamonds. ALROSA is currently seeking patents in major diamond trading centers in the world, and has started applications in the United States, China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, Israel, Belgium and India.

Dr. Oleg Kovalchuk (Master of Science in Technology) who oversaw the project at the Yakutniproalmaz Institute said: “The nanomarking is applied using laser pulses of specific wavelength, intensity and duration. Scanners created by reading the marks to view. Therefore, we have now developed standardized procedures for embedding information and marking rough diamonds with distributed marks to identify it."

Sergey Ivanov, CEO of ALROSA, said: "Led by growing market demand, we are committed to tracking and ensuring the origin of our diamonds. As the world's largest vertically integrated diamond A mining company, ALROSA is in a unique position: by obtaining a complete manufacturing cycle, we have all the necessary information about our polished diamonds and cut rough diamonds. The laser nanomarking technology we created allows these guarantees to be extended to those sold by our partners Diamonds. By purchasing jewelry with diamonds protected by nanomarkers, buyers can be sure that it is indeed made by ALROSA: the three-dimensional code embedded in the diamond is associated with a unique identifier and digital passport in the company’s database, including its production Detailed information on relevant socio-economic benefits."
